Process
- First, you will form groups of four. Each group will need to appoint a producer, an editor, a writer, and a graphic artist. The producer will produce and oversee the production of the poem. The editor will edit the piece of work. The writer will lead the group in the writing of the poem. The graphic artist will do the artwork for the poem. After the jobs have been assigned, as a group, examine these links describing what style is in general. Discuss the different styles of poetry with your group. The second link may be used as a reference when you begin your writing.

- Next, read the narrative poem, "The Walrus and the Carpenter". Refer to p. 138 - 140 of the student text. With your group, complete the literary analysis graphic organizer discussing the setting, plot, and characters of this poem. Next, your group will complete the reading strategy sheet to help you visualize the narrative poem.

- Now, explore these examples of the narrative poetry style. Working with your group, examine the poems and answer the question: what do the two examples of narrative poetry have in common with each other. Be sure to look for the setting, plot, and characters, and try to visualize the poem.

- When you have completed your examination, work with your group to come up with a common list of the critical elements that distinguish the narrative style of poetry.
- We'll compare the lists as a whole class activity. Modify your lists as needed based on class discussion.
- Now, on your own, begin to create your own example of narrative style. Remember poetry uses words carefully. A narrative poem not only uses words carefully, but it also tells a story with a plot. Just like any fiction story, the characters, setting, and plot play an important part in a narrative poem.
- Now, that you have had practice, we will create our television show. Move back into the group of four. Each group will need to appoint a producer, a writer, a graphic artist, and an editor. Together, you will create a poem written in the narrative style. Your group will then have to decide how to present your poem. You may present your poem in the form of a podcast, PowerPoint, digital story, or iMovie.
